Recently we faced quite an unusual job on an E38 – replacing the original metal fuel tank with the plastic version.
After years, the metal tanks in these models tend to corrode, especially around the mounts, welds and seams. The symptoms? Fuel smell, damp patches under the car, trouble filling the tank fully or slight 'sweating' of the tank.
Why a plastic tank? Corrosion resistance, lower weight and a longer service life.
The whole operation, however, requires precise adaptation of the wiring, hoses, sensors and fittings so that everything is compatible and looks factory. In this case we took care of every detail – the routing, brackets, seals and mounting now look completely original.
The end result? The car keeps its factory look, and the problem of a leaking, corroded tank is gone for good.
